Recent conversation at my local library, which has just been modernised (Read: lots of machines installed/ televisions in every room/staff reduced etc. My feelings on this are best left repressed...).
Me: Excuse me. Can you help me? Your online catalogue shows that these books [waves list at him] aren't checked out, but I can't find them on the shelves.
Librarian: Yes, let me just check for you. [Takes list. Furrows brow, and checks computer]. Uhmm, yes, they are all checked in. Let me just check the shelves for you. [Checks shelves]. Ahhh, yes, they aren't on the shelves. As far as the computer is aware, they ARE here, but they aren't. [Smiles in a manner that indicates that the conversation is over]
Me: [stunned silence] Oh. Ummm, thank you.

no :)... I can well imagine what it was like... probably not so funny for you at the time, but now we can shake our heads, smile, and know that we aren't the only silly ones... :)
