The Secret River by Kate GrenvilleA historical novel set in the grimy streets of 19th C. London and Sydney. William Thornhill, born into poverty, turns to crime and when caught is sentenced to life in New South Wales.
Thornhill is seduced by the idea of owning land. As soon as he obtains his pardon, he and his family stake their claim on a fertile stretch of land, only to find the land is already occupied.
Well written, but not a very enjoyable story, imho.
